What could be lurking in your couch cushions? Most of us have furniture that contains toxic flame retardant chemicals. Duke researchers say these chemicals are showing up in young children at five times the rate of what’s in their mothers. Science and policy makers have discovered they can still make furniture to meet fire safety guidelines without the worst chemicals of concern – in fact they’re already starting to do that in California. A new federal policy could give us a safer standard for household furniture and some children’s products like chairs and changing pads. Do you know the clue that lets you know your couch might need a non-toxic upgrade someday?
